Last Day of Australian Championships - 20/4/10

Written by  Julian Peck

Tuesday 20th April -- day 4 of the Australian MR Championships and the final day of the individual competition consisting of a single 20 round shoot at 1200 yards. Conditions were cloudy and cool at the start with light winds and scoring was high.

Ted Hobbs won the 1200 yard shoot with a 99.11v having started with an inner followed by 19 bulls -- Adrian Abbott (Australia) was second with 99.8v and Simon Whitby was third with 98.11v. The result for the Championship was in doubt until the very end -- the top 2 places were taken by Australians, Graham Mincham coming out the winner with a score of 755.61v followed by Barry Southern with 754.67v. Barry Southern was in the lead before the final shoot but suffered a magpie towards the end of his shoot to finish on 95.12 and Graham Mincham scored 97.7v giving him the Championship by 1 point.

Top GB shooters in the Championship were Julian Peck on 3rd place with a score of 751.61v, Alex Cargill Thompson 5th on 750.65 (Julian and Alex were both shooting in the back position) and Tim Kidner 7th on 749.59v -- GB shooters took 6 of the top 10 and 12 of the top 20 places. The Australian Match Rifle Challenge Trophy was presented to Graham Mincham on the firing point. The team matches started next with the Freebairn Match comprising teams made up of the top and bottom scores in the Championship -- conditions were teams of 4 shooting 15 to count at 1200 yards. Shortly after the start the heavens opened and everyone agreed we should retreat to the QRA Club for lunch.

Fortunately the rain stopped before the restart after lunch and the match was won by the Peck Team -- Julian Peck, Ted Hobbs with John Oddy and Kerod Lindley from Australia -- with a score of 291.18v, a new record score for the match which was 7 points ahead of the Brister Team. Next was the Maloney Team Match -- 4 shooters firing 16 to count at 1200 yards but with no sighters. Winners were Victoria State Team with a score of 310.24v, followed by South Australia on 304.27 -- the Welsh Celts were the top GB team in 4th place with a score of 303.18v.

    Hi Steven,

Delighted to help you to join our sport. Are you based in the UK, Australia or elsewhere?

Most of use 1 in 10" twist barrels, generally 32" to 34". If using a barrel longer than 32" it has to be fluted to keep the weight below the allowable limit.

Many of us have the throat chambered slightly longer than standard, to allow us to use heavier bullets and still allow maximum space in the case for powder.

Once you've got your rifle together, contact any of us (see contact details page) to discuss suitable ammo. I suggest you contact us directly by email from now on.

    Julian

Could you please tell me some of the typical 308win load data, rifle twist and length ,bullets and wt., used by the competitors in the 1200 yd. match. I am looking to build a barnard action 308 win. Thanks, Steve Z.
